Realizing Selves: Exploring Personal and Social Transformation within a Christian Ontology

James Wallis Barnes // Anthropology // 27th February // 1-2pm // Arts C 133

Through an in-depth look at one case study this lecture will explore processes of transformation as they are conceived and lived out within a Christian social domain.  How do we, as anthropologists, conceptualize and theorize processes of transformation, especially when such processes involve – as Tylor would put it – Spiritual Beings?  This presentation suggests that the processes of ideological becoming upon which individuals travel are rich and complex involving – amongst other things – transformations in perception, understandings of authority and relationships.  It further suggests that such processes can only really begin to be understood through a careful reading of uniquely placed lives.
